How to read MACD
MACD reads trend direction and momentum from the gap between a short and a long moving average. It tends to signal earlier than moving averages and copes with trends better than most oscillators.

The three parts

Crossovers
MACD crossing above the signal line is a buy signal; crossing below, a sell signal. A bullish cross below the zero line only says the fall is slowing. The uptrend is confirmed once MACD moves above zero.
The zero line
Above zero, the short EMA is above the long one and buyers lead; below zero, sellers do. A simple routine: decide direction with the zero line, time entries with crossovers.
The histogram
The bars show the gap between the two lines. When they start to shrink you see momentum fading before the lines actually cross.
Divergence
Price making a lower low while MACD makes a shallower trough shows selling pressure easing. As with RSI divergence, use it as one input, not a trigger.
Why MACD looks different in MT4 and MT5
The built-in MACD in MT4 and MT5 draws the MACD line as bars and the signal as a line, unlike the two-lines-plus-histogram view on many other charts. The logic is the same: bars rising through the signal line is the bullish cross.
Where MACD struggles
- Ranges: frequent crosses, many false signals.
- Sudden news spikes: it is built on averages, so it lags.
- Very short charts: on 1-minute bars it drowns in noise.

Should I change the 12-26-9 settings?
Start with the defaults. They are what most traders watch. If you change them, test on past data first.
How do I combine MACD and RSI?
MACD for direction and momentum, RSI for stretch. For example, MACD above zero with RSI dipping to about 50 and turning up marks a pullback buy candidate.
Which timeframe gives the most reliable MACD signals?
Longer timeframes give fewer, cleaner signals. Read direction on the 4-hour or daily chart and time entries on the 1-hour.
